In each of the seven letters to the churches, Jesus speaks to “him that overcometh”. John wrote in his first epistle that we overcome when we are born again through faith in Jesus Christ (1 John 5:4-5). Praise God! However, our faith must be active and exercised, daily, so that it’s strong enough, if necessary, to endure suffering and even death at the hands of those who would persecute us for righteousness’ sake (Matthew 5:10). In other words, just as Jesus overcame the world by going obediently to the cross, we, too, need to have great strength of faith should we be called to be a witness (martyr) for Christ through our death.

The most important work we must keep is that of believing that Jesus is the Christ (John 6:29), staying strong in our faith and not falling away (1 Timothy 4:1-3; 2 Timothy 4:3-4).

Beyond faith, there are other works to keep since faith without works is dead (James 2:20). Jesus, who is our example, worked the works of “him that sent me” (John 9:4) and talked of the need for more labourers for the harvest (Luke 10:2), prior to sending out the seventy to heal the sick and declare that the kingdom of God is nigh (Luke 10:9). We must do what we can to reach the lost with the glorious gospel of Christ (2 Corinthians 4:4).

If we ever feel discouraged in our work for the Lord, we must remember the words of Paul in his first epistle to the Corinthians:

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. (1 Corinthians 15:58)

And the promise to all who keep his works unto the end? Firstly, power over the nations as prophesied by Daniel in one of his visions:

But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever. (Daniel 7:18)

And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him. (Daniel 7:27)

Secondly, all who keep the works unto the end will receive the morning star, which is Jesus himself:

I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. (Revelation 22:16)

Amen, and praise the Lord.

Revelation 2:18-29 (Letter to the church in Thyatira)

18 And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass;
19 I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.
20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.
21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.
22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.
23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.
24 But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.
25 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come.
26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:
27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.
28 And I will give him the morning star.
29 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
